Fair questions
Everything people ask before they trust a grant tool.
Straight answers, including the ones that don't sell. If your question isn't here, email hello@axisalign.life, a person reads it.
The basics
What is Funding, in one paragraph?
A grant-matching service for U.S. small businesses, farms, nonprofits, and individuals. You answer a short set of questions about your venture once. We score 9,900+ tracked funding opportunities, federal, private foundation, and corporate, against your answers, flag the dead ends, put every live deadline on your calendar, and tell you exactly what's blocking the money you can't reach yet.
What's free and what's paid?
Browse is free. Create an account and search the full national list yourself, no credit card.
Matched-$79/month at launch (50% off list), or $790/year (two months free): adds the part that takes real work: every grant scored for your specific business, verification that flags dead ends, calendar work blocks and deadline reminders, and the eligibility pre-flight that tells you what's blocking you and how to fix it.
Applied-$249/month at launch (50% off list), or $2,490/year (two months free): adds application support and the business layer: Pro Axis included (CRM, invoicing, and books at pro.axisalign.life) with 5 users (team seats sharing one account and its data) and up to 4 businesses, full funder profiles (990 snapshots, past grantees, key people), and Match Stack sources: where a required cost share can come from, with an in-kind ledger built to survive an audit. When you mark a grant as won, the funder and award port into Pro Axis automatically, the relationship and the spend tracking are just there. The best-known competitor's entry tier is $299/month, and it is sold to nonprofits only.
The launch discount is locked in: whatever price you subscribe at is the price you keep for as long as your subscription stays active. If a renewal payment fails, we retry and remind you twice; after that the term simply ends, no surprise collections.
Where do the listings come from?
Federal grants come from the free Grants.gov API. Private foundations come from IRS 990 filings: the actual e-filed returns, including every grant they paid. State and city/county programs are researched agency by agency from the states' own sites and re-verified monthly. Corporate programs are hand-curated and re-verified against the funders' own sites. That underlying data is public: which is exactly why nobody should charge you $200 a month for a copy of it. What you're paying for is the judgment on top: whether a funder takes applications at all, what they actually fund, whether you're eligible, and the draft.
How fresh is the list?
Federal opportunities refresh from Grants.gov continuously: closed windows are dropped automatically. Every foundation carries a freshness status: verified recently, aging, or failing re-checks. A funder that fails verification repeatedly is removed rather than left to waste your time. If a grant disappeared from your matches, that's almost always why, the deadline passed or the funder stopped taking applications.
Matching
What does "Fit 4/5" mean on a match?
Five categories, one point each, no hidden weights: topic (the funder's own language overlaps with what you do), credential pool (a veteran-, woman-, minority-, or disability-owned program you qualify for: these pools are far less crowded), local (a funder locked to your county, the least-competed money there is), open to applications (confirmed accepting, not invitation-only), and verified (recently re-checked by us). Each card shows exactly which categories it matched. Deadlines never affect ranking, a closing date makes a grant urgent, not a better fit.
Something I qualify for was excluded. Why?
Every exclusion rests on something you told us: your state, your county, your entity type, your 501(c)(3) or SAM.gov status. We show the blockers and the answer each one rests on, and if one of those answers is wrong, correct it in your profile and every match that depended on it re-scores instantly. We deliberately never give you a bare "don't bother", a confident no built on a wrong input costs you real money, so the reason is always visible and always fixable.
Do I have to talk to an AI to use this?
No. Axis, the interviewer in the corner, is the fastest way in: it asks plain-language questions one at a time, you can answer by typing or speaking, and one good answer often fills several fields at once. But it's optional. A plain form is always available with every field visible, and both write the same profile. Stop the interview anytime; it picks back up later with only what's still missing. Axis also answers questions about how Funding works, straight from this FAQ.
I run more than one business. Do they blur together?
No. Each venture gets its own profile: an LLC chasing federal innovation money, a farm chasing USDA programs, and a nonprofit have incompatible eligibility, and blending them would wreck matching for all three. Switch between ventures from the top of your matches page.
What's a UEI, and why does it block so many of my matches?
Every federal award requires a free registration on SAM.gov, which issues a Unique Entity ID. No UEI means every federal opportunity is out of reach, usually the single biggest lock on a new profile. Registration is free and takes roughly three weeks, so start it before a deadline forces you to. We flag this on your dashboard with the exact count of what it's blocking.
We're a nonprofit without our 501(c)(3) letter yet. Is everything closed to us?
Most private foundations grant only to determined 501(c)(3) charities: but you have two unlocks. File IRS Form 1023-EZ (most small nonprofits qualify), or use a fiscal sponsor: an existing charity receives funds on your behalf for a typical 5–10% fee, and that works today, with no waiting on the IRS.
Applying
Do you submit applications for me?
No, and be wary of anyone who offers to. Grant applications, federal ones especially, are attested by an authorized representative of your business, under penalty of perjury for federal awards. We prepare the shortlist, the plan, and the cost-share sourcing. You review, sign, and submit. It's your name on the application; it should be your hand on the button.
Will you guarantee I get funded?
No. Nobody honest will. Grants are competitive, and anyone promising awards is selling you something. What we do promise: you'll apply to the right things, on time, with strong answers, and we'll tell you plainly when a deadline is no longer winnable instead of letting you burn a weekend on it.
How do the deadline reminders work?
Every opportunity has a calendar button, and the download is a standard file that works in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, and Outlook: no account connection, no permissions screens. A real deadline books three things: a drafting work block about three weeks out, a finalize work block a week out, and the deadline itself with reminders at 30, 15, and 1 days. Cyclical programs get a reminder for when the window next opens plus a drafting block; rolling programs get a scheduled work block, because "no deadline" is exactly how applications never get written.
Your data
Why do you ask about veteran status, gender, and ownership demographics?
Because each one gates a real funding pool. Veteran and beginning farmers can qualify for up to 90% cost share instead of 75% on EQIP conservation work, and may request advance payment. NRCS decides each application. Woman- and minority-owned businesses qualify for programs with dramatically smaller applicant pools. Most people don't know their status is worth money. Every one of these questions is optional, leaving it blank means "prefer not to say," never "no."
Is my information sold or shared?
No. Your answers are used to match you to funding, full stop. Never sold, never shared with funders without you doing the applying. Answers are processed by a third-party AI provider to score matches. Ownership demographics are stored inside Funding only and don't propagate to other AxisAlign apps, even on the same account. See the Privacy Policy.
I have an AxisAlign account already. Do I need another one?
No: it's one AxisAlign account. Demographic answers stay inside Funding. Sign in with your existing account and Funding is just there. And an account created here works in every other Axis app the day you want one.
